Indian Paper Industry

Paper Industry is one of the high priority industries having a bearing on the socio-economic development of the country. In India this industry plays a vital role in the overall industrial growth and also provides a necessary medium to propel our knowledge based economy forward in the new millennium.

The Indian Paper industry has traversed a long way since 1812, when the first paper mill in the country was commissioned in West Bengal in meeting the ever growing requirement of consumers within the country and abroad. Today India produces a wide range of paper and paper boards using a variety of raw materials. Indian Paper Industry, comprising of more than 800 paper mills, is highly fragmented and dominated by small and medium scale paper mills with capacity ranges from 20- 50 metric tonnes to 3000 metric tonnes per day. With the globalization of Indian Economy, foreign equity participation has become attractive. The industry is on the growth trajectory and is projected to produce 40 million tonnes by the year 2035.
